Netflix is testing ways to end password sharing and push viewers to pay extra

Netflix will soon launch a test letting primary account holders pay an additional fee for users outside their households — a new attempt by the company to address illicit password-sharing.

According to the Netflix terms of service, a customer’s account “may not be shared with individuals beyond your household.” After years of turning a blind eye to password-sharing behavior that falls outside that requirement, the company last year ran a limited test prompting users to enter their account credentials as a way to nudge freeloaders into paying for their own accounts.

Now, in an upcoming test launching in three countries — Chile, Costa Rica and Peru — Netflix will let members who share their accounts with people outside their household do so “easily and securely, while also paying a bit more,” according to Chengyi Long, director of product innovation at Netflix. The new options will roll out in the next few weeks in the three countries (and may or may not expand beyond those markets).

They're getting a bit too comfortable. Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu and Amazon Prime are literally right there.

If they're so concerned about their financials, maybe they should focus on quality over quantity. Their whole strategy of making a billion things hoping some would stick is clearly not working too well, and especially not when they're canceling actually good shows after 1-2 seasons to fund them which only pisses off subscribers. nicki5

They should just bill based on device. One device is a flat price but every new device signed into with same credentials is an extra $2 per month. That should stop people from giving out their passwords. rav3

If we went through all the good shows they canceled we'd be here all day gaga1 And they were canceled for what? So they could make The Kissing Booth 5? How many times can you even kiss at a booth gaga1

Bold of them to do this as if their title as the #1 streaming giant is not in major jeopardy as Disney's services (Disney+ and Hulu) and HBO Max grow at an absolutely ridiculous rate.
