Florida's governor signs law revoking Disney powers

Supporters of the bill gathered outside Walt Disney World in Florida earlier this month

Quote

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signed a controversial bill dissolving Walt Disney World's self-governing status in the state.

The move is seen as retribution for Disney's opposition to the state's so-called "Don't Say Gay" bill. The company's status in the state in effect allowed Disney to operate as its own municipal government. It included the ability to levy tax, build roads, control utilities and operate its own fire department.

The Florida bill will eliminate Disney's Reedy Creek Improvement District and several others. The measure, however, allows for districts to be re-established in the future. At a bill signing ceremony on Friday, Mr DeSantis accused Disney of lying about the controversial bill, which bars many primary school classrooms from discussing sexual orientation. "You're a corporation based in Burbank, California, and you're gonna marshal your economic might to attack the parents of my state," he said. "We view that as a provocation, and we're going to fight back against that."
On Thursday, Florida's legislature passed a bill, which would largely remove Disney's powers in the special district where its theme park is based.

Disney did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the BBC. Following the move, the district will be dissolved by 1 June, 2023.

The good news is that this isn't actually going to pass. If you note the date that it's meant to go into effect (June of next year), it becomes clear that this is nothing more than grandstanding. The effect date is after the election and after the state assembly adjourns so it'll either be shot down or die. The only reason this is happening is to ensure that the voters vote red in this year's midterms, nothing more.

Even if for some reason it did pass, it'd be quickly repealed because the tax burden this would place on the counties surrounding Disney World would be enough to have them calling for DeSantis' head. Removing Disney's self governing powers actually helps them because it relieves them a couple billion dollars of debt. The only people it'd hurt would be the people of Orange County. So no, they're not really gonna let this happen, especially not since it'd help Disney.

This will have no actual impact other than making DeStatnis and his croonies look like a bunch of idiots which it thankfully already has.
