BTS May Get Pass From Military Service Under Minister’s Plan

A South Korean government minister has called for exempting K-pop group BTS from mandatory military service, as the nation remains divided over preferential treatment for the megastars.

“It would be a national loss,” Culture Minister Hwang Hee said in a statement Wednesday on making the boy band serve time in the military. It would also be a “cultural loss for mankind” if the singers have to “suspend their activities due to the fulfillment of their military service obligations when their achievements in promoting national prestige and their skills are at their peak.”

BTS, in 2020 became the first Asian group since 1963 to top Billboard’s all-genre Hot 100 chart with their English-language single “Dynamite.” The band’s oldest member Jin needs to enlist in the military before the end of this year unless a related law is revised to allow for an exemption.

This is good clap3 The miliatary service really screws some k-pop acts over tbh. If I'm not mistaken they have to serve 2 years as well.. so they would either be missing one or more member for many years to come, or be MIA for 2 years together.

EXO has been doing it for about over a year now true1

just have the remaining members not enlisted to release solo mini albums or something true1

I know they can do that, but with all due respect, BTS are way more popular than them and this would hurt their careers really bad, especially outside of Korea I think true1 But I really think all k-pop idols should have the possibility to pass on military service or get their own kind of service, maybe shorter or something that would also make it possible for them to continue with their careers at the same time.

On the one had i don't get why they should get special treatment if they are fit to serve and it's a requirement for everyone else to do so as it fits in to the narrative of the "elite" being treated differently to everyone else, on the other hand i don't agree with compulsory military enlistment.

It would be interesting to know the thoughts of people from South Korea regarding this.

i think for Idols, they dont get enlisted for the more dangerous roles, so that they could continue their careers.

this is another thought: its really none of our business, really, since its not our country or government.

and their government is nothing like Russia or NK so we really have no say in whether the mandatory enlistment should be a thing or not aura1
