During a recent interview with Gloria Valez for VladTV, R&B singer Ne-Yo shared his thoughts on gender identity and the current sensitive state of the world.

The artist explained that though he doesn’t mind others choosing to identify how they please, his problem begins when he’s called to use people’s pronouns. He compared people identifying as anything other than their assigned sex to identifying as a “goldfish.”

“I came from an era where a man was a man and woman was a woman. And there was two genders and that's just how I rocked,” he told Valez. “You could identify as a goldfish if you feel like, that ain't my business, it becomes my business when you try to make me play the game. I'm not gonna call you a goldfish.”

He went on to discuss parenting, claiming that it’s parents’ responsibility to make decisions for their kids. “I feel like parents have almost forgotten what the role of a parent is,” he explained. “If your little boy comes to you and says ‘daddy I wanna be a girl,’ you just let him rock with that?”

Ne-Yo then asks, “When did it become a good idea to let a 12-year-old make a life-changing decision for themselves?”

For obvious reasons, there were many social media users bothered by his hot take.

Idk but when did it became a good idea to have him speak in an interview when dumb, ignorant, idiotic stuff is coming out of his mouth?

I agree with the goldfish part. I’m not gonna refer to people as ridiculous things like that. But comparing that to being transgender just shows how ignorant he is.

I'm sorry but every time I see conversations like this. All I do is just laugh lol2 Transgender and Non-Binary are two different things and no, kids don't change identities like the Religious Right makes people believe. It's been happening since 90s/2000s and now people are shocked? lmfao1

I don't know why people pull the "back in my day" card. Non-binary may be a new term but people all over the world have identified as trans or gender non-conforming for a hell of a lot longer than the last 10 years and it's really ignorant to act like it's something new.

Some aspects of the community even go back thousands of years, like the Vakasalewalewa in Fiji. They are born males, but dress like a woman and is/was an important part of the Fiji culture. Until white, straight cis males invaded Fiji and made straight people the common. rip4

Yes! Similar to Native Americans and Two Spirit.

Gender being confined to to a pink box and a blue one is essentially white cis het terrorism and is relatively new in the span of human existence  aretha1
