KNK’s 5 stages of grief after a break-up

DENIAL – HeeJun

Denial is typically the first stage. We deny that the break up has happened, realise what really happened, then block out the truth and desperately hold on to the loose threads of the relationship. HeeJun’s attachment to his relationship is depicted by his balloons. We initially see him walking away from the camera with plethora of balloons in his hands, which show HeeJun walking away from the relationship, but still holding on to his feelings. He gazes into the sky and lets go and the balloons fly off, symbolising his realisation that the relationship is over and he lets go of his lover. The next time we see HeeJun, sun is beaming on his face and he is once again holding one balloon, which shows his lingering feelings that he is just unable to let go. The light comes from InSeong (?his significant other), the frame switches, the balloons are back and this time here are more and some are falling. Seeing this light brings HeeJun to a full circle. He is once again holding on to the relationship, and perhaps yearning for even more

ANGER – InSeong

InSeong, oh damn do you look good <3 … oh sorry let me get back to my theory. InSeong is possibly the only member who looks almost displeased or, for the lack of a better word, royally pissed in his solo shots. Most of the other members look more melancholic; InSeong, on the other hand, is seated in front of an orange wall ripping the calendars in frustration. He also intensely gazes at one of the pieces of paper. Interestingly, InSeong also has the most number of syllables in his lines; InSeong has 6 syllables per beat compared YouJin’s 3 syllables per beat. The higher number of words during his parts creates tension, and a sense of urgency, which one could interpret as an expression of frustration or anger. The use of colour during his scenes is also interesting, orange quite strong compared to the overall pastel palette of the mv. I wonder if the director originally planned for the wall to be red in colour (like the Sun teaser photos), but since red is such a harsh colour they substituted it with orange. We know that red can be associated with anger, so it is possible that the colour of the wall also gives us the clue that InSeong depicts the stage of anger.

BARGAINING – SeungJun

This one is where I used quite a bit of imagination to make things fit. Bargaining is usually a response to gain more control. SeungJun doesn’t really show any signs of bargaining in his scenes (why are there so many green pyramids?). Instead I turn towards SeungJun’s lyrics. “Do you look at the same moon as I look at?” which almost implies that if him and his ex-lover are both looking at the same moon they will always be together. We know that the moon comes and goes during the day. But, SeungJun has a trick up his sleave he has captured the moon. As soon HeeJun appears, and adds another green pyramid (?SeungJun’s emotional burden) he searches and finds a revealed disco ball, his moon. It almost seems like with the moon, SeungJun is in control; he is prolonging his relationship, and hiding from the painful reality.

DEPRESSION – YouJin

"From the moment you left, I can do nothing, what should I do?” You can feel the heartbreak in YouJin’s lyrics. Look at his face when he sings those lyrics. That is the depiction of bitterness of break ups. Again colour is used as symbolism, YouJin is seen drinking blue water (… am I the only one who is afraid of blue liquids!?). Blue is clearly the colour of sadness, an emotion that overwhelms us during depression. He finishes his glass and JiHun appears drinking fluid the colour of health and wellbeing, pink. But, YouJin does not notice. His attention is focused on the bottle containing the blue liquid. We see the bottle again, but this time it is empty and a number of them drop and shatter on the floor. It seems that YouJin has chosen to drown out the thoughts of his former love with the bitter taste of blue liquid.

ACCEPTANCE – JiHun

I absolutely love the direction of JiHun’s scenes, each clip seems to frame each step of acceptance. In the first scene JiHun enters a room full of green chairs, a portrayal of his feelings; every single one of them is in line except for one. His gaze falls on the displaced chair is the reminder of his love, his problem. Ready to let go, he walks towards the chair and when he sits down, SeungJun appears (SeungHun confirmed???). The next scene JiHun makes the decision to accept that the relationship is over, he twists the chair back into place. He looks back, almost as if he still longing for his love, but ultimately turns his head towards the camera and moves on.
