Mariah Carey is a legend for sure but...

Recommended Posts

No. But I'm talking about historically. Clearly she isn't 'big in Japan' since all she has done in years is a Christmas album and the highly uncommercial Memoirs.

Obsessed, I Want To Know What Love Is and Oh Santa / All I Want For Christmas Is You seem Japan-friendly +shrug+

Mariah's never established a large touring fanbase - when she was at her prime and outselling every other act in the 1990's worldwide (not just in the US), her tours were very short. She was always busy, releasing an album every year (and #1 singles each year for over a decade straight) and never had the time to stop and properly do an extended global tour. Her first two albums weren't even accompanied by tours. And it obviously wasn't because of lack of interest - the tours she did go on in the 90's, while short, were successful. Her Daydream Tour in particular sold out like hot cakes, especially in Japan, and dayum did she put on a show that year.

Take a look:

Does that take away from her success and talent? No. Does it mean she can't perform? No. She just isn't a touring artist - it's disappointing for an artist of her league, of course, but it doesn't make what she's accomplished any less incredible. Did having extremely limited vocal abilities stop Madonna or Britney from becoming legendary? Nope. What about Celine's complete lack of sex appeal? Whitney Houston being unable to dance? Of course not.

If Mimi had worked to build up her touring repertoire since the start of her career, she'd have a shot at being a big touring act, because she definitely has the potential. Ignoring touring to release album after album ultimately hindered that, but her record sales, live performances, and influence outweigh her lack of touring vitality, imo.

And for those of you saying she was never really that big WW - bullshit. It's true that besides a few markets like the US, Japan and the Philippines, she was never particularly huge in select parts of the world, but OVERALL she still sold well. Even comparing sales outside the US, she'd still be the #3 biggest selling female of all-time, with 105m records sold outside America.

P.S. #1's opened with over 1m copies in its first week in Japan +legend+ She's by far the biggest international female act there.

she is though. 'Madonna in Japan' is largely a relative flop in comparison to 'Madonna the legend' that she is worldwide. She did not have the historical and cultural impact on pop culture there in her early years that made her who she is in other parts of the world. Sad but true.

I will say though that Island Def Jam have been complete and utter MORONS in handling the Mariah Carey brand worldwide since E=MC^2. They just don't seem to care anymore, and it's definitely hurting her WW status. Hopefully she will go back to Sony as rumored where they will actually market her properly.

And Gabe, funny you should be making fun of Mariah not having a radio hit recently when in fact Obsessed (2 years ago) was a bigger radio hit than any Christina's had since 2002.

when Mariah was HUGELY successful in the mid 90s, most artist revenue came from record sales.

Whilst that is definitely true, the percentage Mariah would've received was dramatically less than what she could've received had she decided to tour; back in the 90's, a star of her magnitude [take Celine] could make $100-$150m from say 9 months of touring. It was estimated by People Magazine that prior to the release of Lets Talk About Love in 1997, Celine had a fortune of over $250m. Had Mariah toured, she'd have made a whole lot more, and sold a lot more.

Because she didn't want to damage her voice she never paid attention to doing any huge tours and therefore never got a foundation for selling concert tickets.

Erm, more like she was too busy drinking and getting trollied and enjoying her private life to tour.

I am confident though that with a big comeback album, GOOD LIVE vocals and an actual stage presence (not lying on a couch drinking champagne) would actually gain interest in her live shows again. She just doesn't seem to care.

Truest thing you said

Obsessed was pretty much on par with Edge of Glory and Till The World Ends, roughly 90-something milli airplay, with crazy longevity.

#BOOM

yesss Obsessed was hot. it was a flop outside the US though.

Japan #16

UK #52

Germany failed to chart

Trolling much? Obsessed was never released as a single in Europe. Fact. Her label pulled it. The UK position reflects a REMIX that was available from a compilation package on iTunes for less than 48 hours. You are FUCKING TROLLING.

Honey, while Madonna was never as big as Mariah was in Japan she was still big. The Immaculate Collection reached x4 platinum there for example and most of her albums from the 80s went at least platinum there.

welcome back. I'm not here for having a Mariah vs Celine stanfight. Its not the 90s. Celine is still VERY relevant... amongst middle aged housewives with broken hearts ny2

such a shame she doesn't care about touring. she has really amazing songs. it's too late though, she lost her look & tbh her voice too :/

Madonna's album sales in Japan are in line with Michael Jackson's, Celine Dion's and most other international megastars - in fact, the only international acts in Japan that have sold exponentially [i.e. above 15m] are the Carpenters, Mariah Carey & the Beatles.

Mariah's success in Japan is an anomaly - its just unreal. However, that shouldn't be at the detriment of what Madonna has achieved, which is a whole lot

Her live voice is still fine. She KILLED IT in Brazil just last year. Watch those clips. But yeah she lost her looks and ability to walk, not to mention dance +laughcry+
