The Malaysian Airlines jet which vanished this year may not have sunk to the bottom of the Indian Ocean, according to the respected head of a leading airline.

In a move which will give cheer to conspiracy theorists, Emirates chief executive Sir Tim Clark said he was ‘totally dissatisfied’ with the probable causes being put forward by experts trying to explain the disappearance of Flight MH370.

In an interview with German magazine Der Spiegel, Sir Tim said there was no evidence to suggest the doomed jet crashed into the Indian Ocean – a fate many believe happened.

He said: ‘Our experience tells us that in water incidents, where the aircraft has gone down, there is always something.

‘We have not seen a single thing that suggests categorically that this aircraft is where they say it is, apart from this so-called electronic satellite ‘handshake’, which I question as well.

‘There hasn’t been one over-water incident in the history of civil aviation – apart from Amelia Earhart in 1939 – that has not been at least 5 or 10% trackable.

‘But MH370 has simply disappeared. For me, that raises a degree of suspicion. I’m totally dissatisfied with what has been coming out of all of this,’ he told the magazine.

Sir Tim also said other popular theories surrounding the stricken jet should also be questioned – mainly the belief the aircraft was on autopilot before it ran out of fuel.

‘MH370 was, in my opinion, under control, probably until the very end,’ he said:

The Boeing 777 was heading to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur when it veered off-course and disappeared with 239 passengers and staff on board.

The mystery prompted a slew of conspiracy theories ranging from being accidentally shot down by the US military to various abductions carried out by the Taliban, CIA and even aliens.
